Premier Division

Arsenal’s 2-1 win at Liverpool surely ends the recent League Cup winners’ hopes of securing a Champions League spot. Robin Van Persie’s 91st minute winner pushes the Gunners up into 4th place and ten points ahead of Liverpool. Amazingly, it was RVP’s first ever league goal at Anfield.

Sunday’s big game is between Tottenham and Man Utd (16:10 ko). Spurs midfielder Scott Parker will return to action after having captained England for the first time on Wednesday night against the Netherlands. With just ten caps to his name until Wednesday and at the not so sprightly age of 31, Parker is finally winning the recognition he deserves. A win against United is a tough task though – Spurs haven’t beaten them since May 2001.

The FA Women’s Premier League Cup

The Premier League Cup competition continues on Sunday. Gillingham Ladies take on QPR Ladies and Watford Ladies play Colchester United both at 14:00.

Rugby Union

Wasps hosted London Irish at Adams Park today. The Exiles knew it was a must-win game if they want to push for a play-off position but couldn’t quite get going, losing 18 – 13. They have now lost four consecutive games.

Fellow Londoners Harlequins still lead the table even after a disappointing 9 – 9 draw away to bottom side Newcastle on Friday. Second place Saracens face fellow highflyers Northampton at 17:00 on Sunday.

Boxing

Female boxers will not be forced to wear skirts at the Olympics. Uniform rules have been amended by the Amateur International Boxing Association in light of criticism. Rule 8.1.3 now states: ‘For all AIBA approved events, women boxers must wear… either shorts or the option of a skirt.’

Basketball

Byron Mullens may well join the NBA’s Luol Deng (Chicago Bulls) and Ben Gordon (Detroit Pistons) in Great Britain’s Basketball squad this summer. The seven-foot Charlotte Bobcats star’s mum is from Middlesex.
