Today Labour launched their Assembly election ground war as hundreds of members leafleted over 300 of London’s tube, tram and overground stations.
The leaflets declared that “Ken Livingstone will take fares DOWN” as many commuters made their way to work for the first time in 2012.
As Boris Johnson’s latest fare increase came into effect the leaflets claimed that “Londoners can’t afford these out-of-touch Tory fares hikes.”
Ken Livingstone said “Before millions of Londoners even arrive at work this morning they will have felt the pain of a fourth year of above inflation bus, tube and train fare hikes under Boris Johnson.
“This is the wrong fare rise at the wrong time, taking money out of people’s pockets when the London economy is struggling and when people are very hard pressed.
“Exactly four months today Londoners will face a very clear choice – a Labour mayor who will cut the fares, or a Tory mayor who raises fares, forcing many to spend a quarter of their wages merely getting to and from work. If elected in May I’ll cut the fares saving the average Londoners £1000 over four years.”
Supporters, using the hash tag #faredeal, were in bullish mood despite the miserable weather and dark skies. The Ken 4 London campaign appears to have begun the new year with a bang and Labour will be hoping to maintain this momentum until the election in May.
What the Tory response to this has been is anyone’s guess, however the eagle-eyed Snipe picked up on one Boris aide who, well, didn’t think it was such a great day for them.
