La Soiree at the Round House are essentially a darker, more sophisticated set of circus acts – without the cruelty to animals.
There’s a more urban feel to these jugglers, contortionists, acrobats and comedians than you might find in the big top but that can only be to the good. Certainly the out-sized performances of Le Gateau Chocolate (a very large, camp black opera singer dressed in a variety of bright and wonderful garments), the extra-ordinarily well proportioned ‘English Gents’ or the wonderfully funny Mooky demonstrated there is real talent here.
There were slightly off moments (the clunky ring master or the repeated minor technical hitches) which broke the pace up a little – and I’m pretty sure the night I went one act mucked their set up entirely leaving you with the sense of ‘was that it?’, either that or it was always very, very weak.
However, considering the death defying stunts, incredible skill of the performers and the heart in the mouth moments of danger it’s surprising there were only a few minor hitches all night. With a jolly audience and high energy performances it makes for an excellent night out, but don’t sit in the front row unless you want to get volunteered to be spun round, humiliated or flirted with remorselessly.
La Soiree are at the Round House until 29th January and if you like your juggling dark and frightening – this is the place to come.
