Well, Big Smoke has been up and running for several days now and despite one minor ongoing technical fault, that you wouldn’t notice unless you’re subscribed by rss, it all seems to be working pretty smoothly.
We certainly think there is a real space for an online magazine that is wider than those superb hyper-local blogs like Brockley Central or East London Lines but still covers the council meetings, community events and local news that sadly few of our local papers want to touch any more.
We don’t have the resources of even a small local newspaper but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have a go at closing the gap. The more help we get doing that the better Big Smoke will become, so this is a low key appeal to both ask “What would you like to see here?” and also to request that you send us reports and photos from around London.
Without the scrutiny of local newspapers we are forced to take on trust that our councils are doing a bang up job for us. That might not always be wise, so hearing from your area about what they’re doing, what we’re doing and what you think should be done is really vital, whether through the pages of this site or any other.
We want to make sure that those small groups of righteous dudes beavering away on environmental projects, social endeavors and simply trying to make London a better place have a voice – but that does mean we have to find out about them!
